moving slowly up the drive

I’d walk down from the top block
then I’d walk into the town
Dad cursed and built a fence
the dog dug underground
standing round that big piano
everyone joined in

someone could really play
day followed day
platform in the willow tree
dirt roads and sloping land
songs and words that filled the air
so much to understand
laughing with my best friend
the we’d yell when we got mad

REFUGE
Blackwoods sheltered us
ghost gums shone in the light of the moon
near a fibro room
where we wrote and yelled out loud
to this mad crazy world
childhood fears leaving
words and notes that slowly turned out less wrong
safe from anger
far from fists and names and words
troubles gone
when my friend would play some chords
I’d sing some stream of consciousness line
where the notes I heard
the words I sang
they just never seemed to sound
like the sounds in my mind
Blackwoods gave refuge
ghost gums shining bright
made my heart lift in song
then my friend left it all
and I worked and searched
thought the magic was gone
now I play my own chords
sing my stream of consciousness lines
though the notes I hear

passing sad streets empty and cold
like packets moving
coldness blinking passing’ them on
images shift
tiny phrases killing’ you dead
cruelty packaged
in things you’ve heard
and things you’ve said
people weaving
eyes not seeing thoughts unaware
they’re seeking’ searching’
worlds uncaring
not really there
don’t send to me
just talk to me
talk to me
or just leave me alone
we’re standing’ in a crowd
we’re not in your phone
the jokes are fun
while you still laugh
but then they’re gone
they don’t last long
you need outside to find your dreams
not in that screen
not some machine
